1 Executive summary

Bottom line: the best 8-iron so far, by a hair. 126 yds total, 123 carry, 94.0 mph ball speed, and only 6 ft of curve. It lands at 43° and stops within 3 yds, the same flight as report #1 with a straighter line.

The slow-motion clip shows a clean, centered strike and the same reliable frame: connected takeaway, hips that hold their depth, balanced finish. The head still drops, about 4½ in by impact (vs ~6 in in report #1), and launch stays high at 23°, so the 8-iron still flies only ~6 yds past his 9-iron.

Strength

Straight and solid

6 ft of curve, centered contact and the same distance twice in a row: a repeatable 8-iron.

Priority 1

Stay tall

Keep the cap on its address line, especially in the first half of the backswing, where the dip starts.

Priority 2

Hands ahead

Hands over the lead thigh at impact to bring launch from 23° to ~18° and add carry.

★ best 8-iron numbers in the logbook so far. Club speed isn't on the screen: at a typical 8-iron smash of ~1.36–1.38, 94 mph of ball speed means about 68–69 mph. The curve direction isn't reliably readable on the panel (glare), so only its size is logged.

What it means: two swings, almost identical numbers (±1 yd, ±0.5 mph): this is his real 8-iron today. The gap to the LPGA average is mostly launch: ~5° too high. Same speed with ~18° launch should be worth ~128–130 yds carry.

3 Timing & tempo — measured from the video

This clip is an iPhone slow-motion video: the swing was captured at 120 frames per second and plays back 4× slower. Times below are converted to real time (each frame = 1/120 s, about ±0.01 s).

GroupBackswingDownswingRatio
André (8-iron #2, slow motion)~0.45 s~0.31 s~1.5:1
André (8-iron #1, same session)~0.50 s~0.28 s~1.8:1
André (9-iron #1, Oct 28)~0.50 s~0.25 s~2:1
PGA Tour (Tour Tempo, "24/8")~0.80 s~0.27 s3:1

Tour figure: John Novosel, Tour Tempo. Frames: takeaway 66, top 120, impact 157 (54 and 37 frames at 120 fps). If the phone recorded at 240 fps, every time halves but the ratio stays the same.

What it means: a quick, short backswing, as in all his irons. The ratio is the one to watch: a slightly slower, fuller backswing (~0.6 s) moves it toward 2.5:1 and gives the hands time to lead at impact.

4 The reference frame — how this swing was measured

Reference frame
  • Grid: each square is about 5 inches (~6.7 px per inch at the golfer), scaled from his hip-to-ankle length, so treat distances as ±1–2 inches.
  • Vertical center line (light green): the head's address position. Horizontal lines: cap height (white) and hip height (light green) at address. The white box is the head at address.
  • Two corner diagonals (green): a fixed perspective scaffold for depth.
  • Paths: the red trail is the head and the yellow trail is the hands, frame by frame from address to impact. The red circle is the ball's address spot; in this frame the ball is just leaving the face.
  • Body points were tracked automatically on every frame (210 frames), head height was measured from the top of the cap, then checked by eye at each key position. The camera is fixed.

Left: impact close-up in slow motion (frames 155–158, 1/120 s apart): clubhead arriving, at the ball, ball launched. Right: the sole shown to the camera after the swing, an "8" with no bar under it (on his clubs only the 6 and 9 have the bar).

6 Position-by-position biomechanics

Club: 8-Iron, read on the sole in the video. Logged as report #2.

Photo 1 — Address Good

  • Athletic posture, weight centered, hands just ahead of the clubhead.
  • Ball a touch forward of center, the same spot as the other 8-iron swing.
  • As in the other clip, the cap sinks ~2 in while he settles over the ball.

Photo 2 — Takeaway Good

  • A connected, one-piece start: hands, arms and chest move together.
  • The head keeps sinking as the club moves away.

Photo 3 — Lead arm parallel Watch

  • Lead arm wide, club on plane.
  • The cap is ~4½ in below its address line here: the dip happens early, then he partly recovers it by the top.

Photo 4 — Top Good

  • Full shoulder turn with the club near parallel (~0.45 s backswing).
  • The head is ~2 in down and ~1½ in toward the ball; hips ~1 in back, no slide.

Photo 5 — Downswing Good

  • Hands drop in front of the chest as the hips start to clear.
  • The head starts sinking again into the strike.

Photo 6 — Impact Head down

  • Clubhead at the ball; one frame later (1/120 s) the ball is moving.
  • The cap is ~4½ in lower than at address, horizontally back on its line.
  • Hips ~1 in toward the ball and ~1½ in higher: a hint of standing up, much smaller than the head drop.
  • Hands ~2 in ahead of their address spot.

Photo 7 — Ball launched Good

  • Ball leaving low and clean off the face: centered contact (94.0 mph ball speed).

Photo 8 — Release Good

  • Arms extending toward the target, chest turning through.
  • The head stays down until the ball is well gone.

Photo 9 — Finish Excellent

  • Full, balanced finish on the lead side, trail toe up, held while he watches the ball.

7 Where the 8-iron sits in the bag

ClubCarryTotalBall speedLaunch

7-Iron144 yds147 yds104 mph22°
8-Iron #2 (best)123 yds126 yds94.0 mph23°
8-Iron #1122 yds125 yds93.5 mph22°
9-Iron116 yds117 yds92.2 mph27°

Both 8-irons confirm it: ~21 yds under the 7-iron but only ~7 yds over the 9-iron, with almost the same ball speed as the 9. Less added loft at impact is the key to a healthy ~12-yd step.

8 Diagnosis

  1. Head dip (~4½ in): it starts during the takeaway, eases at the top and returns into impact. Smaller than in report #1, but launch is still 23°.
  2. Hips hold depth: no early extension; a slight rise (~1½ in) at impact.
  3. Tempo ~1.5:1: quick backswing, tour-speed downswing.
  4. Contact: centered and straight (6 ft curve); the slow motion shows the ball leaving cleanly.

9 Next steps — keep it simple

1

Cap on the line

Freeze the cap height before you start back, and keep it there until the lead arm is parallel. 10 slow swings, then full speed.

2

Hands ahead

Feel the hands over the lead thigh at impact. Target: 17–19° launch with the same 94 mph.

3

Slower back

Count "one-two" back, "three" down. A fuller backswing makes room for the hands to lead.

10 Limitations & next capture

Confidence: high on ball flight (range screen), club ID and impact; good on tempo; moderate on head and hip distances.
